Safety Data Sheets and eSDS

Companies, which supply chemical mixtures for professional use, must provide their clients with safety data sheets. The safety data sheets must be prepared according to national regulation and in the official language(s) of the country or countries in which the chemical mixtures are marketed.

Since 1 December 2010 substances and mixtures in the EU must be classified and labelled according to the CLP regulation: Classification, Labelling and Packaging of chemicals. CLP is the European implementation of GHS. It is implemented gradually and will become effective by 1 June 2015.

The new safety data sheet
The requirements to safety data sheets in the EU are outlined in the REACH regulation, Annex II. As of 1 December 2010, labelling has been moved from Section 15 to Section 2. In addition, a number of new compulsory subsections to the 16 main sections were introduced. The changes in Annex II apply to safety data sheets for both pure substances and mixtures

Extended safety data sheets (eSDS)
A number of the substances registered under REACH must include an exposure scenario. The exposure scenario explains how to handle the substance safely. Information from the exposure scenario must be incorporated in the safety data sheet, thus termed an extended safety data sheet or eSDS.

Mixtures may contain exposure scenarios for several substances. This information must be compared and overall instructions for safe use must be included in the extended safety data sheet for the mixture. Exposure scenarios for pure substances will be available when the substances are registered.
