Food contact materials

Production equipment, packaging and kitchen utensils intended for direct or indirect contact with food can sometimes leach undesirable substances into the food.

Migration of chemical substances from the material to food depends on temperature and time, food acidity, and fat content, and the chemical and physical properties of the packaging material.

Migration testing
We offer to plan migration tests for given materials and ingredients and to assess the result in accordance with the existing legislation. We ensure that the appropriate tests are ordered, and we cooperate with accredited external laboratories.

Product development
During product and process development the legislative demands should be observed at the earliest possible stage. This ensures the best possible choice between technically feasible options. Advice can be given on the most optimal choice with regard to health, safety and organolecptic characteristics, and this also applies to situations when already known materials are wanted in a new composition.

Food legislation
We are experts in the field of food legislation, and we are able to assess how food and additives react under specific conditions. In a situation where a choice between several types of packaging or development of new types of packaging is required, it should be clarified how the packaging reacts in different environments. We ensure that the selected packaging complies with the legislation, and that unnecessary expenses for the development of unfit food contact materials are eliminated.

We can help you with

  • Advice during the development of new types of materials, so that the food contact material lives up to the legislation. In addition, we can assess which alternative gives the most optimal product with regard to health and safety.
  • Sparring with respect to product development where already known materials are used in a new context, for example in active and intelligent packaging.
  • Clarification of questions in connection with quality control of manufactured food contact materials.
  • Clarification of the existing standards and regulatory demands for given materials in Denmark, the EU and USA.
  • Declarations of compliance with relevant food contact legislation
